M’Goun Summit Trek – 7 Days

Experience one of Morocco’s most spectacular mountain treks, taking you from the beautiful Aït Bougmez “Happy Valley” to the summit of M’Goun at 4,071 metres and deep into the dramatic M’Goun Gorges.

Over seven days, you’ll cross remote valleys, high mountain plateaus and traditional Amazigh villages, while experiencing the landscapes and culture of the Central High Atlas. The adventure combines challenging mountain days with peaceful camps, local encounters and unforgettable scenery.

The highlight is the ascent of M’Goun, followed by a spectacular descent through the Oulilimt and M’Goun valleys before entering the famous M’Goun Gorges, where parts of the trail follow the river through the canyon.

A true High Atlas adventure for hikers looking for mountains, culture, remote trails and an authentic Moroccan experience.

This 7-day M’Goun trekking adventure takes you from the beautiful Aït Bougmez “Happy Valley” into the remote heart of the Central High Atlas.Starting from Marrakech, we travel to Aït Bougmez and begin our trek through traditional Amazigh villages, green valleys and high mountain pastures. We gradually gain altitude towards the Tarkedit Plateau before tackling the highlight of the journey: the ascent of Mount M’Goun, reaching 4,071 metres.

From the summit, the trail leads down through the spectacular Oulilimt Valley and into the M’Goun Valley, where we follow ancient trails through remote villages, fields and seasonal nomadic areas. The final trekking days take us into the impressive M’Goun Gorges, with sections of the trail following the river and passing through the water.

After completing the trek, we transfer back towards Marrakech, with a stop in Kelaa M’Gouna, the famous Valley of Roses.

This is a rewarding and varied High Atlas adventure, combining high mountain landscapes, remote valleys, Amazigh culture, traditional villages and the dramatic M’Goun Gorges.

Day 01 :

Day 1: Marrakech – Aït Bougmez Valley – Azib N’Ikkis

We depart from Marrakech at 8:00 AM and drive towards Azilal, following a scenic mountain road over the Tizi N’Tirghist Pass before reaching the beautiful Aït Bougmez Valley, known as the “Happy Valley.”

Our trek begins by crossing the agricultural fields, where we can observe local villagers going about their daily activities. We then follow the small Arous Valley towards the shepherds’ summer pastures at Ikkis n’Arous.

The drive takes approximately 5 hours, followed by around 2.5 hours of walking. We gain approximately 500 metres in elevation before reaching our campsite, where we spend the night in tents.

Day 02 :

Ikkis N’Arous (2,250 m) – Tarkedit Pass (3,400 m) – Tarkedit Plateau (2,900 m)

We begin the day with a steady ascent towards the Tarkedit Pass at 3,400 metres. Along the way, we will stop to enjoy spectacular views of the M’Goun mountain range and the summit of Mount M’Goun, rising to 4,068 metres.

After crossing the pass, we descend approximately 500 metres to reach the vast Tarkedit Plateau, an area traditionally used by nomadic communities.

This is a full mountain day, with around 5.5 hours of walking, including a 1,050-metre ascent followed by a 500-metre descent.

Day 03 :

Tarkedit – M’Goun Summit (4,071 m) – Oulilimt Springs (2,600 m)

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. We set off early and continue climbing towards the ridge before reaching the summit of Mount M’Goun at 4,071 metres.

From the summit, we enjoy spectacular panoramic views across the Central Atlas, with the M’Goun massif and distant valleys stretching towards the Draa and Dadès regions.

After enjoying the summit, we begin a long descent through impressive mountain landscapes towards our campsite at the Oulilimt Springs.

Day 04 :

Oulilimt Springs (2,600 m) – Oulilimt Valley – Aflafel Spring (2,200 m)

We continue through the beautiful Oulilimt Valley, an area traditionally visited by the Aït Atta nomadic communities who move seasonally from the Valley of Roses and the Saghro Mountains with their livestock.

We follow the spectacular river valley downstream, tracing the course of the river that eventually becomes the M’Goun River. After around 4.5 hours of walking, we reach Aflafel Spring, where we set up camp.

The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Day 05 :

Aflafel Spring (2,200 m) – M’Goun Valley – Imi N’Irkt

Today we follow a trail alongside the river as we descend through the M’Goun Valley. Along the way, we pass through traditional Amazigh villages surrounded by fields of corn and wheat, as well as apple and walnut trees.

We stop near the village of Taghreft, in the heart of this beautiful valley, for a freshly prepared lunch.

After lunch, we continue walking for around 1.5 hours before reaching our campsite near Imi N’Irkt, whose name means “the gateway to the gorge” in Tamazight.

Day 06 :

mi N’Irkt – M’Goun Gorges – Tiranimine – Aguerzegua

Today we enter the spectacular M’Goun Gorges. The trail takes us through the river, with several sections requiring us to walk directly through the water.

As the gorge narrows, the river becomes an integral part of the route. The water can be cold and refreshing, particularly during the summer months.

We take a break for a traditional hot tea and lunch near the Ifasfas Spring before continuing through the gorge towards Aguerzegua, where we spend the night in tents.

Descent: -500 m
Overnight: Camp

Day 07 :

Aguerzegua – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast, we take a short local transfer of approximately 10 km to reach the main paved road, where our vehicle will be waiting for the journey back to Marrakech.

On the way, we stop in the town of Kelaa M’Gouna, famous throughout Morocco for its roses and the annual Rose Festival, traditionally held in May.

We continue our journey towards Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Driving time: approximately 6.5 hours

This marks the end of our M’Goun trekking adventure and our services.
